American Cancer Society’s First Annual Be Your Own MVP event at Yankee Stadium

On July 29, 2010, the American Cancer Society held its first annual “Be Your Own MVP” event at Yankee Stadium in the Legends Suite Club. The event encouraged men and women to come out to help raise money to fight back against cancers that affect men. Kioli had the great opportunity of attending this educational and fun event. Marie Cimaglia, Regional Vice President of the Nassau county American Cancer Society, tells Kioli of just how important this event means to her organization.
“We have the opportunity to educate men on their health,” Marie continued, “They can enjoy Yankee Stadium, eat some healthy food and learn from those directly affected by cancer in their lives.”
Marie Cimaglia has been with the American Cancer Society for 8 years and hopes to make this an annual event for men.
“Everyone has been affected by cancer at some point… whether it’s a friend or a family member… people should know they have a place to go to learn more about these things.” Marie said.
The D’Elia brothers from Massapequa lost their sister 6 years ago. They showed their support for this cause along with their father at Yankee Stadium.

“I got involved originally because I went to one of the American Cancer Society events and saw what a great organization they were. I had done a lot of work with different organizations over the years but obviously had a personal attachment to this one since I had lost my sister, Meg.” Tony D’Elia explained.

The chance of getting prostate cancer goes up as a man gets older, while any adult can have colorectal cancers – most of these cancers are found in people age 50 and older. According to the American Cancer Society, smoking is the cause for more than 80% of all lung cancers, but people who do not smoke can also have lung cancer. Pamphlets containing information on these cancers circulated throughout the Legends Suite Club.
Kioli caught up with Lee Launer, an Actuary and sponsor for the health event. Launer is retired from Price Waterhouse and Coopers and dedicates his time to help raise awareness. He tells Kioli why he got involved with the American Cancer Society.
“Two friends of mine, who were ill, now work for ACS. They devote their lives to helping raise money for awareness,” Lee continued, “Being aware and educated on your health definitely helps lower the mortality rate. I am happy to be part of this organization.”
It was quite a turnout for the event. Former Yankee Outfielder, Roy White, was also there signing copies of his new book, “Then Roy said to Mickey…The Best Yankee Stories Ever Told.” All had access to a photo opportunity with the 2009 World Series Trophy and Championship Ring. Many took an unforgettable tour of the new stadium… including Kioli.
